In its August crop report, USDA estimated a 2020-21 U.S. crop of 18.08 million bales.

Upland production was estimated at 17.53 million bales and extra-long staple production at 555,000 bales.

Harvested area was an estimated 9.25 million acres, implying a non-harvested area of about 2.94 million acres. The resulting abandonment rate is about 24.11 percent. The national average yield per harvested acre was estimated to be about 938 pounds, 90 pounds more than the five-year average.
