In its October crop report, USDA estimated a 2020-21 U.S. crop of 17.05 million bales. Upland production was estimated at 16.50 million bales and extra-long staple production at 545,000 bales.
Harvested area was an estimated 9.01 million acres, implying a non-harvested area of about 3.11 million acres. The resulting abandonment rate is about 25.67%. The national average yield per harvested acre was estimated to be about 909 pounds, 61 pounds more than than the five-year average.
