In its September crop report, USDA estimated a 2020 U.S. crop of 17.06 million bales. Upland production was estimated at 16.51 million bales and extra-long staple production at 559,000 bales.

Harvested area was an estimated 9.01 million acres, implying a non-harvested area of about 3.11 million acres. The resulting abandonment rate is about 25.67%. The national average yield per harvested acre was estimated to be about 910 pounds, 62 pounds more than the five-year average.
