1952 to 1998 Inclusively
(Annual Percentages for 15 Cotton Producing States)
Annual percentages of Beltwide yield losses to cotton seedling diseases (Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium spp., Fusarium spp., etc.) have been recorded since the 1952 crop. These records were provided by Dr. Don Blasingame, Chairman of the Cotton Disease Loss Estimate Committee. The following observations are based on the data shown in the table of annual percentages of crop yield losses to cotton seedling diseases:
- The highest yield loss to cotton seedling diseases was 4.03% in 1966.
- The lowest yield loss to cotton seedling diseases was 1.48% in 1977.
- The Beltwide average annual yield loss for the 47-year period is 2.85%.
- There were 21 years with Beltwide yield losses above the 47-year annual average.
- There were 26 years with Beltwide yield losses below the 47-year annual average.
- The largest three-year variation in Beltwide yield losses was from 3.64% in 1976 ... to 1.48% in 1977 ... to 3.30% in 1978.
- The most dramatic five-year increase in Beltwide yield losses was 2.07% in 1962 to 4.03% in 1966.
