Currently, nearly ninety percent of cotton, corn and soybean acreage in the United States is planted with seed varieties containing biotechnology, and the United States is the largest producer and exporter of crops derived from biotechnology.

Like pharmaceuticals, biotech traits have patents that expire. Once the patient expires, the product is considered to be "generic."Keith Menchey, Manager of Environmental and Science Issues for the National Cotton Council explains how this affects U.S. production agriculture and  international trade.
