Cotton Newsline: October 4, 2006

As the 2006 season comes to a close, the boll weevil eradication is about 85 percent complete nationwide.

In the late 1970s, the National Boll Weevil Eradication Program was launched by USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service along the Virginia-North Carolina border. According to Bill Grefenstette, Program Coordinator, as the 2006 season comes to a close, the boll weevil eradication is about 85 percent complete nationwide.

The active phase of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program is projected to be done by the end of 2009. Grefenstette says they are now working on post eradication plans.

As adjustments are made for the post eradication plan, Grefenstette says there are still challenges ahead.
