The total losses from insect pests in the 2006 cotton crop was at an all time low in the U.S.  Michael Williams, entomologist from Mississippi State University, records the level of damage yearly to determine which pests are most problematic.

Although the lack of rainfall last winter had an affect on the drop in insect pests for the season, Williams attributes much of the decline to effective management practices.

Williams warns that, even though damage has been low, the pest complex is changing and certain insects, such as the spider mite, may experience a resurgence. Producers and researchers should not become complacent because of recent trends.
