Cotton producers use precision agriculture to mange their inputs such as seed, fertilizer, and growth regulators, but most are still using a blanket approach to water management.  Earl Vories, an agricultural engineer for USDA Ag Research Services, has been testing an irrigation pivot that allows for variable rate water applications.

Vories says precision irrigation saves water and improves yields by customizing a pivot to the individual producers’ fields and isolating the areas that need moisture.

As with any new technology, Vories says there are also potential problems with the variable application pivots.
