Early Season Production Management Practices: Seed Quality and Seedling Vigor

C.L. 'Bill' Scott

ABSTRACT

Like any industry, cotton has made giant strides over the past 30 years. For example, we have and entirely different slate of new, higher yielding varieties, thanks to farseeing plant breeders. We have the module handling system. We have planters that will plant to a stand. I'm old enough to recall the days when we planted 30 pounds of seed per acre and hand thinned. Today, it is possible to get a stand, planting five to nine pounds of seed per acre.

In light of these and other changes that have taken place, and I'm sure there are more to come, we need change in the cotton planting seed industry.

And that needed change is my bottom line, if I can use a common term in today's business environment.
