Early Season Production Management Practices: Irrigation

Sam W. Stedman

ABSTRACT

Most Arizona cotton growers pre-irrigate their cotton prior to planting. Arizona relies on surface irrigation solely. Rainfall is not considered when making decisions on cotton production management. Pre-plant irrigations accomplishes many things. It fills soil profiles with water to be drawn upon later as plants increase water usage. Also, germinating weed seeds, softening of clods for ease of seed bed preparation are accomplished. Leaching of salt is also accomplished with the pre-plant irrigation.
