ABSTRACT

Capture®2.OEC (bifenthrin-proposed common name) has been shown to be efficacious against numerous pests of cotton. These pests include Heliothis spp., boll weevil, Lygus spp., pink bollworm, whitefly, cotton aphids, and other insects. Additionally, Capture is efficacious to spider mite pests. Replicated studies indicate the insects mentioned above are controlled at rates of 0.04 0.10 lb ai/A. Using both presence-absence and quantitative sampling techniques, it has been determined that single applications of Capture at 0.05 to 0.1 lb ai /A can control light to moderate mite populations and that higher rates of 0.06 to 0.1 lb ai/A and/or multiple applications may be necessary to control moderate to heavy mite populations. Results also indicate that it is advantageous to initiate mite treatments at a point early in their population growth when using Capture insecticide/miticide.

The attribute of providing both insect and mite activity adds flexibility in the strategies for which this product can be used in cotton pest control. Thus, depending upon the prevalent pest spectrum, Capture may be used alone or as an intermittent treatment in conjunction with Ammo® 2.5EC insecticide, or other larvicide, to provide optimum use of its insecticide and miticide activity. This allows Capture insecticide, miticide to be utilized in a grower pest management program as a primary insecticide with the added benefit of miticidal activity and/or as a primary miticide with the addition of insect control.
