Cotton Dust Control: Drawing

Melvin R. Witcher, Jr.

ABSTRACT

Current cotton drawing frame dust control methods emphasize local exhaust ventilation of the machine's drafting zone. Exhaust volumes applied by five major textile companies for three (3) representative frame models - Platt Saco Lowell's Versamatic® Type 746, Rieter's Model D 0/6, and Zinser's Type 720-typically range from 800 cfm to 1500 cfm. Modification of the manufacturer's integrated exhaust air filtration system is common by connection to large-scale centralized filtration equipment. An alternative approach involves the use of the manufacturer-supplied internal fan ducted to an external filter box, with fur-type fabric media which is cleaned manually based on static pressure requirements. Both techniques have been shown successful in controlling drawing area dust conditions to below the 200 µg/m3 OSHA PEL. The respirable dust contribution from creel operation has been found to be minimal, and exhaust ventilation of this machine segment is unnecessary to maintain adequate control.
