Strategies for the Use of Naturalis-L for Control of Cotton Pests

Jane Yuster

ABSTRACT

Naturalis-L is a biological insect control agent based upon the naturally occurring, insect specific, fungus Beauveria bassiana. Naturalis-L represents a breakthrough in biorational insect control agents. The product may be used either alone or in an integrated pest management(IPM) system. The most important issue affecting the successful use of Naturalis-L is spray coverage. Naturalis-L is a contact biocontrol agent. There must be contact between the target pest and the product. It is of paramount importance that the best possible application equipment and technology be used. Climatic conditions in the United States are diverse. It is, therefore, almost impossible to outline a single strategy for use of Naturalis-L which will be applicable for all situations. Further factors such as resistance, which pests are prevalent, and, of course, economics, will play a major factor. However, when properly used, Naturalis-L offers cost effective control of a number of cotton insect pests combined with a superior environmental profile.
