Cotton Fiber Diameter Distribution as Measured by AFIS

C.K. Bragg and J.D. Wessinger

ABSTRACT

There is a need for an accurate and rapid method of measuring cotton fiber fineness distribution. Since there is a method for measuring the distribution of fiber diameter using the Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS), it is possible that diameter measurements could be used to estimate the effects of fineness distribution. When testing five International micronaire Calibration cottons on the AFIS and comparing results to their micronaire values, there was a significant relationship between average fiber diameter (as measured by AFIS) and micronaire reading. These measurements were found to be highly repeatable. Diameter distributions were found to behave in predictable ways when high and low micronaire cottons were physically blended and measured, providing a possible method for studying the effect of distribution of fineness on processing quality.
