Breaking the Testing Precision Barriers

Ed White, Hossein Ghorashi, and Roger Riley

ABSTRACT

With full support of the United States cotton produces through their organization, Cotton Incorporated, and with the co-operation of USDA as well as researchers, merchants, spinners and instrument manufacturers, HVI was developed. Acceptance by the textile industry has been remarkable in the 15 years since late 1980. The main measurements of micronaire, length, length uniformity, strength, color and trash have given us, for the first time ever, the ability to determine the true values and performance characteristics of cotton. Nevertheless, some in the industry, although convinced of the potential benefits from HVI, question the degree of precision and accuracy necessary for successful use by all in the cotton industry. In particular, the measurement of fiber strength, without a doubt a very important single property, has received much criticism and attention.
