Multidata AFIS

J.M. Yankey and Peter C. Jones

ABSTRACT

The AFIS instrument began with a modular design concept. The concept is, for the AFIS to have the capability to add future modules that measure additional fiber properties. These new modules should be able to be installed into any new or existing AFIS. The modules should be designed so that the installation can be easily done in the field by trained service technicians.

This modular concept is designed to give the AFIS user ultimate flexibility. Modules can be purchased when needed or as they become available to the market. This eliminates the need for additional instruments, lab space, and operators.

Currently there are three (3) data modules available for the AFIS. They include the Neps, L&D, and Trash modules. Typical testing time required is three (3) minutes for each repetition. For the Neps and L&D modules the procedure is three (3) repetitions for each sample and for trash it is five (5) repetitions for each sample.
