Control of Whitefly with Ovasyn®

John Lublinkhof and Phillip N. Odom

ABSTRACT

OVASYN®, containing the active ingredient amitraz, has been documented to enhance the activity of other insecticides. The active ingredient is currently registered for use on pears, swine, cattle and bee hives with an anticipated registration on cotton.

In 1992, a Section is was granted in Arizona for the use of OVASYN against the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. University of Arizona extension recommendations supported its use in combination with selected insecticides.

In 1992, Watson (Univ. of AZ), Akey (USDA), Ellsworth (Univ. of AZ), Natwick (Univ. of CA), and Moore and Odom (NOR-AM Chemical Company) conducted field trials using OVASYN alone and in combination with Thiodan® (endosulfan) or Capture" (bifenthrin). In all trials reported, B. tabaci population pressure was very high to extreme. Results show that OVASYN at 0.25 lb ai/A alone reduced immature populations substantially. However, the combination of OVASYN at 0.25 lb ai/A with Thiodan at 0.75-1.0 lb ai/A or Capture at 0.04-1.0 lb ai/A improved control, generally providing very satisfactory results. Watson and Natwick also obtained yield data in their trials. Similarly, OVASYN at 0.25 lb ai/A alone increased yields substantially. However, the combination of OVASYN at 0.25 lb ai/A with Thiodan at 0.75-1.0 lb ai/A or Capture at 0.04-1.0 lb ai/A improved yields significantly.

Data indicate that OVASYN is relatively safe on beneficials.

OVASYN provides effective control of B. tabaci when combined with selected insecticides and can serve as a viable tool in a resistance management or integrated pest management program.
