Comparative Efficacy of Pyrethroid and Organophosphorus Insecticides on Cotton in North Ghana

A.B. Salifu

ABSTRACT

A number of insecticide active ingredients from pyrethroid and organophosphorus sources were screened over a 4-yr period to compare their effectiveness for controlling jassids and bollworms. The insecticides were applied in sequence as single product relays or as mixtures. Results indicated that both tactics were comparable in reducing bollworm damage, although the single product sequence tended to give higher seed cotton output. The single product sequence involving chlorpyrifos and cyhalothrin was an especially effective tactic for minimising overall insect damage. Isoxathion and profenofos were most potent against jassids (Jacobiella fascialis); their efficacy being manifested in their use as single products or in mixtures. The results are discussed in the perspective of implications for a resistance management program in Ghana.
