Tobacco Budworm-Bollworm Management on Cotton Using Low Rates of Pyrethroid Insecticides plus Ovasyn

John A. DuRant

ABSTRACT

The pyrethroid insecticides lambda-cyhalothrin (Karate) and cyfluthrin (Baythroid) were applied to cotton as foliar sprays during July and August alone and combined with amitraz (ovasyn) for control of lepidopterous pests, predominantly Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). Rates (lb[AI]/ acre) were 0.03, 0.01, and 0.003 for each pyrethroid alone and 0.01 and 0.003 for each pyrethroid combined with amitraz (0.125). The 0.03-lb rates were extremely effective and the 0.003-lb rates were relatively ineffective. Ovasyn enhanced the effectiveness of both pyrethroids, especially the 0.003-lb rates. High rates of Karate were the most detrimental to predator population densities.
