Comparison of Weather Damaged Replanted Cotton

ABSTRACT

The plant stand in a cotton irrigation study planted on May 14 was damaged by three weeks of cool rainy weather and replanted on June 10. In order to evaluate the replanting decision, the first planted stand in part of a nonirrigated and one irrigated treatment were kept. Seedlings in the first planted cotton stand were visually divided into three vigor categories and monitored throughout the growing season. Development of the replanted cotton stand was also compared to the first planted cotton. On June 10 shoot fresh weights declined significantly between each vigor category from highest to lowest vigor, but root fresh weights were not different. Three weeks later, on June 30, average survival of the three vigor categories was 100, 90, and 54 percent, respectively, for the highest to the lowest vigor categories. At this time, both shoot and root fresh weights decreased significantly from highest to lowest vigor categories. Plant height and mainstem nodes were different between all vigor categories until August 5 in nonirrigated cotton and until September 14 in irrigated cotton. Boll number per plant was highest in seedling vigor category 1 plants and significantly different between all vigor categories. By July 8, one month after planting, plant heights of first planted and replanted cotton were the same within soil moisture levels but first planted cotton had one to two more mainstem nodes than the replanted cotton. Boll maturity was similar between first planted and replanted cotton but nonirrigated cotton was more mature than irrigated cotton. Lint yield decreased significantly between each vigor category in both soil moisture treatments but first planted cotton yields were similar to replanted cotton stands. There was no benefit from replanting when approximately 100,000 plants/ha survived in the first planted cotton stand compared to a population of 190,000 plants/ha in cotton replanted on June 10.
