Swinging Single - Low Cost Universal Density Press for the Low and Intermediate Volume Ginner

D.W. Van Doorn

ABSTRACT

The Swinging Single has been fully commercially tested during the 1984 ginning season in two gin installations. After its initial debugging period, it performed beyond its design specifications. Its novel features allow a single-box press to produce universal density bales at rates over 15 bales per hour, providing substantial savings in capital investment. The tramper, box turning mechanism and one box of the present universally used double-box presses are eliminated. Furthermore, the novel bale door construction minimizes ram force, energy, labor, and maintenance requirements. Installation costs are low also, as it may be installed in an existing flat-bale press pit with minimum alteration. Safety hazards are reduced, as only one door fully opens, and it will not open if a dangerously misformed bale is in the press.
