In the past, the determination of nep counts has been a laborious and time-consuming task requiring extensive sample preparation and examination. With the introduction of the Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS), nep content can be determined quickly and accurately with a minimum of operator interaction. The AFIS, as with any measuring device, must have an absolute reference standard for calibration. The Topological MapMaker (TMM) provides this standard.
