The Mississippi Plan for Providing Cool Test Results

Clyde Jones

ABSTRACT

The cool test procedures suggested in the AOSA Vigor Testing Handbook is not presented in sufficient detail to insure consistent results from laboratory to laboratory. Inconsistent results have created problems for the cotton seed companies and confusion among the producers as to the meaning of cool germ results. There are four "musts" to be addressed if cool germination tests are to provide information that will be useful to cotton producers. They are:

1. Use of proper testing equipment and supplies. 2. Use of proper testing procedures. 3. Use of proper sampling techniques to insure that seed samples are representative of the appropriate seed lots. 4. Proper interpretation and reporting of results.
