Using Cotton Marketing Alternatives

O.A. Cleveland, Jr.

ABSTRACT

Alternatives are wonderful things. Yet the biggest problem we have with cotton marketing alternatives today is that we really don't use the ones we have. There isn't the kind of deliberation going on that there should be. Maybe there was some agonizing last fall in deciding whether to accept the strong equity or to hold for a higher price, but far too few cotton producers even tried to work out a way to use the alternatives available to sell their crop.

Cotton marketing alternatives are wonderful concepts. An alternative is an opportunity, an opportunity to choose. However, alternatives are totally useless unless you analyze them, understand them, make a choice, and then implement the decision. We've all heard that opportunity knocks but once. Actually, the cotton market will typically give you a second chance. Yet, no matter how many times opportunity knocks, you have to unlock the door and open it to get any benefit. Alternatives offer you the key to successful cotton marketing
