USDA-ARS Cotton Breeding Research at Mississippi State, MS – Past, Present and Future. Early breeding and genetics research focused on discovery of germplasm with resistance to the boll weevil. As boll weevil eradication became feasible, research shifted to plant resistance for other economic pest of cotton. Current and future research involves resistance to nematodes and development of useful genetic diversity emphasizing fiber and seed oil quality.
