SOME FACTS ABOUT COTTONSEED DAMAGE AT GINS

Gino J. Mangialardi, Jr.

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews research on cottonseed damage at cotton gins during the period 1939-90. It describes how damage to the seeds and their germination are affected and how seed-coat fragments in lint are created by the storage of seed cotton and the ginning operations. The influence of the gin stand on damage to the seed coat is specifically covered. The publication compiles the available significant information from previous research and formulates a basis for new studies to reduce the amount of damage to cottonseed caused by the ginning process.
