ABSTRACT

Under a cooperative research contract with the U.S. Navy, a number of chambray and twill-weave shirting fabrics of maximum finished weight of approximately 5.5 oz/yd2 were produced using a combed, 100%-cotton warp and a variety of true core yarns developed at SRRC in the filling direction. The greige fabrics were scoured and bleached before being finished with a combination "FR & DP" finish. Evaluation of the finished fabrics revealed that the research approach of utilizing high-tenacity synthetic filament fiber-core yarns was viable, but the core yarns might be needed in both warp and filling directions to produce fabrics of required specifications.
