Mid-Season Weed Management Practices

John R. Abernathy

ABSTRACT

For my presentation this afternoon, I wish to concentrate on mid-season weed management practices for cotton production. These weed management practices include options that could be considered from early postemergence applications up until harvest time.

For this presentation, I have divided herbicide options into selective vs non-selective; i.e., selective herbicides being ones with true selectivity to specific cotton growth stages vs non-selective herbicides that would injure cotton if inappropriately applied to it. In the true selective category we must include the postemergence topical applications. Historically we have used the herbicides MSMA and DSMA for control of various species of grass, primarily johnsongrass, in cotton from California to the Southeast. Granted, these two chemicals can have harsh effects on cotton and indeed are only labeled for postemergence topical applications in some states.
