An Evaluation of Cythion RTU for Cotton Boll Weevil Control

F.A. Harris and W.C. Jany

ABSTRACT

Efficacy and spray droplet characteristics wee evaluated when CYTHION Insecticide® RTU, CYTHION Insecticide® 91% and MALATHION 57% EC were applied by airplane and by ground equipment to cotton for boll weevil control. CYTHION RTU and CYTHION 91% were compared as aerially applied oil based ULV sprays (1 qt/acre). CYTHION RTU and MALATHION 57% were compared both as aerially applied water based CLV sprays (2 gal/acre) and as Hi-Boy applied water based CLV sprays (5 gal/acre). Caged boll weevil bioassay data and spray droplet measurement showed no significant differences between CYTHION RTU and CYTHION 91% when both were aerially applied ULV in oil. CYTHION RTU at the 1x rate (0.8 lb ai/acre) was almost as effective as MALATHION 57% EC at the 2x rate (1.6 lb ai/acre) when both were aerially applied CLV. Under condition of this test CYTHION RTU was effective both as a ULV oil diluted spray and as CLV water diluted spray when measured for boll weevil control and for spray droplet characteristics.
