Radial Agricultural Tire Performance

J.P. Mueller and P.R. Treanor

ABSTRACT

Radial tractor drive wheel tires have been available for a number of years from all major tire manufacturers and their popularity continues to increase. Considerable data has been published showing the performance advantages when bias tires are replaced by radials. In this paper, we discuss the bias and radial drive wheel performance differences and demonstrate that by replacing bias tires with radials, field productivity can be improved with a corresponding reduction in wheel slip. This reduction in wheel slip also allows a reduction in tractor weight while maintaining the radial tires productivity advantage over the bias tire. Obviously 2 reduction in tractor weight and reduced slip will reduce soil compaction.
