Ginning for Maximum Grade Without Excessive Short Fibers, Neps, and Trash

ABSTRACT

Processing cotton at the gin is a compromise. The cotton gin enhances the value of the cotton by separating the fiber from the seed and by removing objectionable foreign material. Neps and short fibers increase during gin processing and foreign matter levels decrease. The technology does not exist to clean the fiber without incurring some fiber damage. This paper reviews the limitations of the gin process and provides guidance to help achieve the best possible balance between fiber cleaning and subsequent fiber performance at the textile mill.
