ABSTRACT

Staple Cotton Cooperative Association, known as STAPLCOTN, is a producer-owned cotton marketing cooperative that handles abut one-third of cotton produced in the Mississippi River delta region of the United States. The cooperative annually markets between 40 and 50 percent of the cotton grown in Mississippi and is the U.S. It has the stated objectives of providing viable marketing alternatives and price protection to its producer-members.

STAPLCOTN maintains two basic options under its Mill Sales Program from which producers may select a marketing plan that best satisfies their needs. The purpose of this study was to analyze these two marketing options. A comparison of cotton process and producer-member returns was made to ascertain whether STAPLCOTN has provided price risk protection and price enhancement to Mid-South cotton growers.
