Chemical Fingerprinting of Boll Weevils Using a Surface Tipid Analysis

Gerald H. McKibben and James T. Robbins

ABSTRACT

GLC profiles of cuticular lipids extracted from the surface of boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) collected from several Mississippi counties were compared. Accuracy in identifying insects from the counties compared thus far has been about 90%. Near 100% accuracy was achieved in distinguishing overwintered from mid-season boll weevils. There were also significant differences between the lipid profiles of males and females, and in native and laboratory colonies.
