S.J. Torok and M.W. Woolverton

ABSTRACT

Cotton producers face a plethora of decisions that affect their profits. Many of these decisions are in the form of "what if" questions, e.g., "what will happen to my profits if I participate in the 1985 cotton program?" The adoption of electronic worksheets or spreadsheets by cotton producers can simplify these business decisions and facilitate record keeping, financial planning, and marketing. Virtually no computer programming skills are needed for adopting spreadsheets and most cotton producers can learn to use a spreadsheet on their own microcomputers in less than a day. We provide an explanation of spreadsheets, advantages and disadvantages of their use by cotton producers. In addition, actual spreadsheet applications that include evaluating participation in the 1985 cotton program and determining the placing and lifting of a cotton futures hedge.
