Aim™ (CGA-112913) Applications to Cotton for Heliothis Control

Janet Moore and Henry Ray

ABSTRACT

CGA-1 12913 (CIBA-GEIGY trademark - AIM) was synthesized by Ishihara Chemical Company in Japan. Development rights to the compound in the United States were obtained and field testing began in 1980. Aim is an insect growth regulator, which inhibits chitin synthesis and belongs to the broad class of benzolphenylurea chemistry. It is an odorless, colorless, crystalline product with good photolytic and hydrolytic stability. Aim has low mammalian toxicity with an acute oral LD(50) in excess of 1,000 mg/kg, and an acute dermal LD(50) over 7,000 mg/kg. Aim is only slightly soluble in water and has a log P partition coefficient of 5.8. The compound shows moderately rapid foliar dissipation and binds rapidly in soil. Soil degradation appears slow, but leaching is insignificant. Two-year toxicology studies are now complete.
