ABSTRACT

Short staple flax fibres can be processed from flax (linum usitatissimum) by means of the "REUTLINGEN STEAM EXPLOSION METHOD". The blending with cotton fibres makes it possible to produce natural rotor and ring staple yarns, appreciated by the textile market in Europe. To determine the spinability of flax fibres, an AFIS-System was modified by Zellweger Uster Inc., Knoxville, in cooperation with the IAF REUTLINGEN, Southern Germany. Both, fineness distribution and number of wood and coarse flax particles measured by AFIS have turned out to be important for spinning behavior.
