Demonstration of Measurement of Strength, Length, Color, and Micronaire by Vis/NIR Reflectance Spectroscopy. Part II. Data Analysis Results

Steven M. Buco and Joseph G. Montalvo, Jr.

ABSTRACT

Past research has indicated that nondestructive VIS/NIR reflectance spectroscopy measures fundamental fiber properties of wall thickness and perimeter with precision equal to the laboratory error of the primary method used to calibrate the instrument. The current study experimentally demonstrates the ability of the technology to measure more complex properties including strength, length, color, and micronaire with precision on the order of HVI technology. Principal component regression was applied to VIS spectra, NIR spectra, and combinations of VIS/NIR spectra to determine which spectral region(s) and data processing algorithms produced optimum results.
