Use of Mean Length as an Indicator of Short Fiber Content

ABSTRACT

For general textile utilization of cotton, a knowledge of the long fibers may be sufficient. However, for high quality applications, information about the short fibers is also required. Uniformity Index (UI) for combersorter measurements is highly related to Short Fiber Content. The relationship between HVI UI and Short Fiber Content, while not as good as for comber-sorter measurements, appears to be useful as an indicator of Short Fiber Content. Calibration of HVI measurements to Mean Length standards appears to be a way to greatly improve the relationship between the Short Fiber Content and UI for HVI measurements.
