ABSTRACT
Progress in repeatability of HVI measurements has been sufficient to the extent that thought is being given to the qualitative aspects of the measurements. For example, interest is being focused on specimen selection and preparation. The definition of the characteristics of a properly constituted specimen is being considered in that well-defined specimen selection and preparation may improve measurement integrity and provide information of additional importance to cotton users and producers. One possibility involves collecting load-extension data during strength tests and analyzing for use in: determining when cotton specimens are properly prepared, promoting more uniform specimen preparation, and, thereby, reducing variability in strength tests and differences between testing instruments.
