Monitoring Temperature and Relative Humidity in a Testing Laboratory

ABSTRACT

Moisture is a critical factor in most processes related to cotton--ranging from production of cotton to testing its fiber properties and manufacturing into yarn. In some cases moisture is beneficial, while in other cases it may be detrimental. In a fiber testing laboratory, moisture can have a significant effect on test results. Tensile strength is particularly affected. To determine the feasibility of on-line measurement of relative humidity and temperature for use in adjusting test results, a Fiber Testing Laboratory was monitored over a three-month period. The results indicated that strategically placed sensors can be used to record localized changes in temperature and relative humidity. The standard laboratory control system was efficient in controlling average laboratory conditions. Can be detected quickly and reliably.
