Biological Basis for a Boll Weevil Winter Survival and Spring Emergence Model

D.R. Rummel and S.C. Carroll

ABSTRACT

There is a linkage between boll weevil winter survival rate and the subsequent spring-summer emergence profile. Major factors influencing boll weevil winter survival and the spring-summer emergence profile are: 1) time of diapausing boll weevil entry into winter habitat; 2) vigor of boll weevils entering winter habitat; 3) winter severity; and 4) weather during the spring-summer emergence period. An understanding of these factors serves as a basis for the development of a winter survival and spring-summer emergence prediction model.
