ABSTRACT

Eleven non-pyrethroid insecticide treatments were evaluated in a field study to find suitable alternatives to the pyrethroid class of insecticide against Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) and Heliothis virescens (F.) on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum [L.]) in South Carolina. Tests were conducted at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center in Florence and at the Edisto Research and Education Center in Blackville. The results of the second year of a two year study are presented. Karate, Larvin, Larvin + Ovasyn, and Bolstar proved to be efficacious against H. zea and H. virescens at both locations. Karate produced significantly higher yields than any other treatment at both locations. However, Larvin and Larvin + Ovasyn followed Karate in yield. Larvin alone or in combination with Ovasyn is a suitable alternative to the pyrethroid class.
