Cottonseed Storage at Cotton Gins

William Mayfield, Michael H. Willcutt, and Thomas D. Valco

ABSTRACT

Alternate markets for cottonseed and the fear of not being able to move cottonseed during the ginning season have created interest in gin yard cottonseed storage facilities. Because of their unique characteristics, storage and handling facilities must be designed specifically for cottonseed. Also, storage facilities must be equipped with a properly designed aeration system. This report describes the characteristics of cottonseed, general considerations for aeration system design and operation, loading/unloading systems, and general feasibility of investing in long-term gin yard storage or cottonseed.
