Gin Compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act

Phillip J. Wakelyn and Jack Link

ABSTRACT

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) makes it unlawful to discriminate in employment against a qualified individual (worker with disabilities). The employment title of the ADA potentially will have the greatest impact on cotton ginning employers. Businesses with 25 or more employees, who work 20 or more weeks in a calendar year, are already covered, and businesses with 15 or more employees will be covered in 1994, at which time some gins may be subject to the ADA. Industries covered will have to develop a new understanding of disabled people, revise hiring practices, and possibly modify working facilities.
