ABSTRACT
Cowpea control with postemergence herbicides was evaluated in 1990 and 1991 and interactions of preemergence and postemergence herbicides utilized for cowpea control were examined in a separate study in 1991. The most effective early (cotton 3 to 4 inches) postemergence treatment was Cotoran + MSMA applied as a directed spray. Greatest cowpea control and reductions in cowpea biomass 6 weeks after planting (WAP) were achieved with Cotoran + MSMA (early postemergence directed) and sequential [early and late (cotton 6 to 7 inches)] directed applications of MSMA followed by (fb) MSMA, (Probe + MSMA) fb (Bladex + MSMA), and (Cotoran + MSMA) fb (Bladex + MSMA). Greatest lint cotton yields were achieved with these four treatments plus Cotoran + MSMA applied early over-the-top. In 1991, preemergence and early postemergence treatments alone failed to provide adequate cowpea control, but enhanced control levels achieved with the late postemergence directed herbicides.
