Command® 4EC Herbicide: Incorporation into Cotton Weed Management Programs

L.D. Hatfield and H.R. Mitchell

ABSTRACT

Development of Command 4EC Herbicide for use in cotton has been in progress for several years and has progressed to the point of submission for federal registration of planting time and layby applications for this crop. Preplant incorporated or preemergent application of Command must be used only with in-furrow applications of the organophosphate insecticides disulfaton (DiSyston®) or phorate (Thimet®) to reduce the potential for stand loss or excessive phytotoxicity. Layby applications made after cotton has reached five nodes does not require previous organophosphate application.

Command herbicide provides excellent control of many key grass and broadleaf weeds of cotton. Command combinations with fluometuron (Cotoran®) and/or trifluralin (Treflan®) provides a very broad spectrum of weed control in both conventional and reduced tillage cotton production. Yield results from replicated studies across the Cotton Belt support the benefit provided by Command use in cotton.
