The Influence of Storage on Cotton Strength and its Measurement by HVI

ABSTRACT

A study was conducted to determine if HVI strength for cotton changes during aging. several cottons were retested ten months after harvest to determine if an observed change was due to fiber strength, moisture content or the HVI testing method. Samples from across the U.S. cotton belt were collected and tested promptly during the harvest season. Moisture content was measured on raw and cleaned samples at the same time each strength test was conducted. We found some loss in the HVI strength and elongation measurements after storage. There was a slight gain in moisture content which did not contribute to the HVI strength loss. Strength measured with our universal tester showed a slight increase which was consistent with the moisture increase.
