Research Efforts with Genes of Linkage Group V. I. Loci Proximal the Centromere

C.L. Rhyne and J.C. Carter

ABSTRACT

Genes of linkage group V are of fundamental interest as well as of economic importance. Among these are genes for glanding, nectaries, male-sterility, abundance of lint, and maintaining purity of a cultivar. Working from a model based on researchers' work and obtaining critical gametes for verification, the results exhibited no contradictions if the genes near the centromere were arranged in the order Le(1) N(1) Lf Ne(1) Ms(8). Recombination values both agreed and departed from reported values, possibly because of small sample sizes but probably because localization was altered by insertion of donor DNA with the gene being investigated.
