A True Orange Pollen in Cotton

C.L. Rhyne and J.C. Carter

ABSTRACT

In addition to yellow and cream pollen of G. hirsutum and yellow, orange and cream of Pima, a true orange pollen has been established for each species. Stocks with this orange pollen have been placed with the appropriate collection centers. Studies in F2 populations of Pima using crosses of yellow pollen stocks X the Pima R.O. Stock yield four classes of pollen color; parental yellow and (R.) orange, and two additional classes, yellow-orange and Pima orange. The yellow-orange marks the third locus with p(3)p(3) and the true orange phenotype has both the p(2) and p(3) recessives as genotype p(1)p(1) p(2)p(2) p(3)p(3). F2 data from (S-4 X Pima R. orange) were used to show the several-times, repeated, segregation-pattern of 9 yellow; 3 yelloworange; 3 Pima orange; 1 (R.) orange.
