Financing the '85 Crop -- A Lender's View

John C. Gamble

ABSTRACT

During the next few minutes, I'll be discussing with you the subject of "managing risk." I'm concentrating on three variables in this risk equation, ie ... production, price or marketing, and credit. At one time, we were able to concentrate on any one of these variables and the ship would continue to sail or at least putter along. However, the prolonged gyrating economic environment has caused each of us to re-examine the total picture and not just a particular or single phase of our operation. Without close adherence to a total management concept that appropriately positions production, price, and credit variables, the ship, I'm sorry to say, has a better than average chance of sinking.
